Lesson #5 Sharing information and digital contents

In this lesson we learned about the importance of visual contents for communicating through the internet as they are highly appealing. Examples of visual contents that gather and summarize information are videos, label clouds, infographics and GIFs, graphs, tables, posters etc. They attract users attention on social media. It is important for us to be aware of the nature of the contents that we share in terms of licensing but also of reliability and accuracy. Sources must be checked and quality information must be sought for in order to prevent the spreading innacurate knowledge or data.

We also spoke about resource sharing through the internet. Since started teaching I have frequently used websites such as islcollective or tes.com. The latter offers resources for English learning at all primary and secondary stages. Although it began as a free of cost resource sharing website, in recent years teachers upload their resources and sell them to other teachers.

The definition given by the Unesco of OER's is the following: they are teaching, learning and research materials in any medium digital or otherwise that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions. OER form part of ‘Open Solutions’, alongside Free and Open Source software (FOSS), Open Access (OA), Open Data (OD) and crowdsourcing platforms. OER's must follow the rule of the 4 R's:
  • Re-use: Right to copy and use verbatim copies.
  • Revise: Right to adapt, rework and improve.
  • Remix: Right to combine into new OERs (open educational resources).
  • Redistribute: Right to share copies.
  • Retainmake,own,andcontrolcopiesofthecontent
